2015 Cactus Bowl, Arizona State vs. West Virginia: Date, time, location and more

Get ready for a lot of offense!

SB Nation 2015 Bowl Calendar

After 11 years at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, six years at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix and 10 years at Sun Devil Stadium, the Cactus Bowl is headed back to the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks for a return to Chase Field in 2015.

With Sun Devil Stadium in the midst of a multi-year reconstruction project that was restarted immediately following the conclusion of the regular season of the Arizona State Sun Devils, Chase Field will serve as the temporary home of the Cactus Bowl once again.

When Chase Field last hosted the game, it was known as the Insight Bowl. Founded as the Copper Bowl, the game has had many names, including the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, but became the Cactus Bowl in 2014.

Here is everything you need to know to get ready for this year’s Cactus Bowl:

Arizona State Sun Devils (6-6, 4-5 in Pac-12)

A roller coaster season in Tempe finally comes to its conclusion, and a campaign that began with the promise of a preseason top 20 ranking ends in disappointment. Arizona State lost in a wide variety of ways in 2015: The Sun Devils never got off the launch pad in losing their opener to Texas A&M, was blown out in its Pac-12 debut by USC, dropped a triple overtime barn burner against Oregon, and gave up a last-second field goal to lose to Cal.

It wasn’t all negative for ASU, though. The Sun Devils obliterated then-No. 7 UCLA, one of the season’s most inexplicable results. They also beat their equally unpredictable in-state rival Arizona, their fourth Territorial Cup win in six seasons. But those results simply did not match expectations.

The Sun Devils face this bowl trip without offensive coordinator Mike Norvell, who was hired as the head coach at Memphis following the end of the regular season.

Last bowl game: 2014 Sun Bowl (36-31 win over Duke)

All-time bowl record: 14-13-1

Head coach’s bowl record: Todd Graham is 5-2 overall in bowl games, including a 2-1 record at Arizona State.

West Virginia Mountaineers (7-5, 4-5 in Big 12)

West Virginia has been a streaky team in 2015. They started their season with three straight wins, then faced four straight ranked teams and lost all four. That nightmare stretch of Big 12 pavement gave way to the lighter side of the conference, and another string of victories -- over the likes of Kansas, Iowa State and Texas -- brought Dana Holgorsen to his fourth bowl game in five years as WVU’s head coach.

As usual, the Mountaineers are looking for a shootout when they step on the field. Wendell Smallwood and Rushel Shell had combined for more than 2,000 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns through the first 12 games of the season. Quarterback Skyler Howard is similarly shifty -- he rang up more than 200 rushing yards in the team’s back-to-back wins over Kansas and Iowa State (Combined score? 79-6).

However, West Virginia has struggled to impose that will against top opponents. In seven wins against unranked opponents, they’ve scored 39.7 points per game. In four games against ranked teams, all losses, that figure drops to 24.5. They’ll have to find a way to step up their offensive game against a solid defense if they’re going to break a two-game postseason losing streak.

Last bowl game: 2014 Liberty Bowl (45-37 loss to Texas A&M)

All-time bowl record: 14-19

Head coach’s bowl record: Dana Holgorsen is 1-2 in bowl games.
