SPARTY YES. Michigan State clinched its spot in the Playoff with a dramatic win over Iowa. With 9:31 on the clock and a four-point deficit, the Spartans put together the longest drive by any team all year. The 22-play, 82-yard effort took 9:04 off the clock and finished with a whirling, diving touchdown by freshman running back LJ Scott.
Here’s what happened on college football’s conference championship Saturday
Good morning! It’s the Read Option, your Sunday wakeup roundup of college football stuff.

The game started as a field goal fest, and included the best “DOINK” you’ll ever hear. Iowa nearly made its narrow lead larger on a pass into the end zone, but Michigan State was able to pick it off after it gently rested on a defender’s back. That wasn’t the only deflected interception in the game, either. Michigan State’s Connor Cook bonked a pass right off the helmet of one of his linemen, directly into the arms of an Iowa defender.
Iowa fans completely took over Indianapolis for the game, even managing to stripe the stands of a neutral field.
The Playoff field will be announced around 12:30 p.m. ET Sunday. Here’s your guess at what the full bowl picture will look like.
Clemson’s in, too. The Tigers head to the Playoff at 13-0 after beating North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game. This one ended in controversial fashion, as officials ruined the Tar Heels’ chance at a comeback with an awful botched onside kick call.
That might not even have been the oddest special teams play of the day. Deep in his own territory on 4th-and-15, Clemson’s punter decided to try and pick up a first down. It did not go well, and he got an earful from his coach.
Alabama is the only team to make both of the first two Playoffs. The Tide defeated Florida in the SEC Championship Game, winning the program's 25th SEC title and securing a Playoff spot. Alabama's defense flustered Florida all day, not allowing an offensive touchdown until there was 5:02 left. Florida QB Treon Harris even tried to throw two passes on one play (don't do that).
The Tide’s offense didn’t fare all that much better, first taking the lead on a safety and entering halftime with a narrow 12-7 lead. But the Tide did provide their weekly perfect block.
After the game, Alabama QB Jacob Coker’s hat was taken by one enterprising fan. And Charlie Weis made his way onto the field, with an Alabama shirt (there’s a reason).
Stanford takes the Pac-12. Christian McCaffrey had himself a day. The Cardinal running back broke Barry Sanders’s record for all-purpose yardage in a season and his own program all-purpose yardage record in a game (461, fifth-most all-time), as Stanford ran all over the Trojans. USC’s coaches could be heard screaming and cussing from the press box as McCaffrey did work on their defense.
This game had some fireworks. An awkward sportsmanship attempt led to a helmet smack, a Stanford player accidentally kicked a USC player in the face (and nearly got the tackle) and Juju Smith-Schuster wrecked a Cardinal defender with a flurry of stiffarms.
Trouble in Houston. Tom Herman’s Cougars won the AAC Championship and clinched a New Year’s bowl, so fans rushed the field. Some overzealous security guards attempted to stop some, punching and tackling field rushers in a chaotic scene. Houston’s athletic director said he is working with police to review the incident.
Texas ... beat Baylor ... in 2015? The Bears essentially ran out of QBs and still almost beat the Longhorns, but Texas held on. The two had a sideline-clearing brawl, including one Texas player who was extremely amped up.
- Auburn DC and former Florida HC Will Muschamp expects to be named the head coach at South Carolina. Fellow candidate Rich Rodriguez announced he’s staying at Arizona.
- Syracuse hired Bowling Green head coach Dino Babers, bringing Baylor’s offense to a program that could use some points.
- Rutgers will reportedly hire Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash.
- North Texas hired North Carolina OC Seth Littrell.
- The BYU job is open and complicated, and it’s the most important hire in school history.
Individual feats of excellence:
- Former Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt dissed Penn State on TV while Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin was just feet away from him.
- Former USC running back Reggie Bush used an NCAA loophole to attend the Trojans’ Pac-12 Championship Game appearance. It was the first USC game Bush attended since NCAA sanctions.
- Verne Lundquist yelled “WOW!” with great gusto after a terrific Alabama coach.
- 410-pound Baylor tight end LaQuan McGowan received a carry ... on 2nd-and-6 at midfield.
- Temple wide receiver Robby Anderson made a full extension one-handed catch against Houston.
- You, the fans, put together an OK season of College GameDay signs.
