Texas Tech AD to replace Oliver Luck on College Football Playoff committee

There is now a Texas representative on the selection committee.

Paul Frederiksen-USA TODAY Sports

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt will be joining the College Football Playoff selection committee, replacing outgoing West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck. Luck is leaving the West Virginia job, as well as his place on the committee, to take a nebulously defined job with the NCAA.

Hocutt has been the athletic director at Texas Tech since 2011, and before that was the athletic director at Miami for three years. He played linebacker at Kansas State in the early 1990s, and has also spent time working at Kansas State and Oklahoma. A few members of the media, including our own Texas Tech blog Viva The Matadors, thought back in January that he might be a fit as the new Big 12 representative on the selection committee, which now is looking a bit prescient.

The Texas native’s appointment to the selection committee should please Baylor head coach Art Briles, who went on a prolonged rant after his Bears were left out of the 2014 Playoff, citing the need for someone from Texas to be involved with the selection process.
