When Wisconsin and Duke meet in the national championship on Monday, they’ll be going for their second and fifth top-division men’s basketball titles, respectively. However, neither school has been able to claim that accomplishment on the football field.
Which colleges have the most combined football and basketball national titles?
It’ll be a while before anybody catches up with the Ivy League’s old football titles, but several power programs have impressive combined résumés.
Wisconsin went to three straight Rose Bowls at the turn of the decade, and the Badgers have been successful in recent years, but they have yet to claim the sport’s top prize. Duke has only recently climbed to relevance, but the Blue Devils are far from national title contention.
Only nine schools can claim championships in both sports, and only two — Michigan State and Florida — have multiple championships in each.
Here’s the full list of combined national championships (football counted only from College Football Data Warehouse, while basketball titles are since the start of the NCAA Tournament in 1939).
The top two that have won titles in both sports are Michigan and UCLA, with 12 apiece. Of Michigan’s titles, 11 come in football, while 11 of UCLA’s come in basketball.
