Nearly two weeks after it was announced that he was leaving Notre Dame, Everett Golson has chosen to transfer to Florida State, FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman reported. Prior to his decision, Golson had been linked to several teams, including Florida, Georgia, LSU and Texas, but the favorite heading into Monday was Florida State.
QB Everett Golson transferring to Florida State from Notre Dame
The former BCS Championship Game quarterback will be one of the favorites in the Seminoles’ QB competition.
“To coach Jimbo Fisher, the Florida State football team, staff, alumni and fans, thank you for allowing me to become part of the Seminoles family,” Golson said in a statement to Feldman. “I can’t wait to get started.”
Last week, Florida State was “negotiating” with Golson, and would not promise him a starting job, according to Jimbo Fisher. The senior will likely compete with junior Sean Maguire, who threw for 339 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions as Jameis Winston’s backup in 2014.
Golson quarterbacked the Fighting Irish to the BCS Championship as a sophomore in 2012, but missed the 2013 season due to academic improprieties that led to him leaving Notre Dame for a semester. He returned in 2014, but had turnover issues (14 interceptions) that obscured his 37 total touchdowns, and went nine straight games with at least one pick.
Despite his issues, Golson is still a highly talented player who could be a significant addition to the Seminoles if he can reign in the turnovers.
