Jim Harbaugh calls rival Michigan State ‘the biggest guys on the block’

Good morning! It’s your daily roundup of college football stuff.

Well that's different. The line that some Michigan fans (and players!) sometimes throw around about Michigan State is that the Spartans are the "little brother." Well, Jim Harbaugh said something unexpected again and referred to MSU as "the biggest guys on the block" while speaking to a group of high school coaches.

Mark Dantonio’s program has won six of seven against U-M and has won as many BCS-level bowls in the last five seasons as the Wolverines have fired head coaches.

Can we talk about this? Baker Mayfield is in the mix at Oklahoma for the starting QB job, but as far as I'm concerned, the competition is over. Mayfield hit a world class-level whip in this video taken by a teammate, and if you don't have him as your Heisman frontrunner, you need to seek medical attention.

Let’s walk through this masterpiece.

0:01: Okay, so far so good. Nothing really blowing my socks off, but the boy can move.

0:05: OH S--- HE’S DOING IT

0:06: This footwork is certifiably fancy.

0:09: [one exaggerated sucking-in of air]

0:14: BAKER MAYFIELD IS NOW PRESIDENT READ THE CONSTITUTION IT’S IN THERE

Turtle power? Bill Connelly’s preview series focuses on Maryland, who could be in the verge of a nice run under Randy Edsall. That is, if they can avoid taking a step back.

Edsall is not safe; he’s still going to show up on hot seat lists, and he’s still 20-30 in four seasons. His team played four top-30 teams (in terms of F/+) and lost by an average score of 47-17. With a new quarterback, new(ish) receivers, new defensive coordinator, and new defensive alignment, he cannot afford to take much of a step backward.

But he’s surviving. And with every year you don’t get fired, you have another opportunity to get your house in order. Recruiting is hinting at a future, and all Edsall has to do is stay out of the way.

Speaking of Maryland. Oklahoma State quarterback Daxx Garman is transferring there, and will be eligible immediately. The Terps will be Garman's third program, as he joined OSU after Arizona.

HAVOC! Bill reached into his bag of number wizardry for every team’s havoc rate from 2014, a statistic that measures the number of plays a defense creates a tackle for a loss, sack, forced fumble, tipped pass, or interception. Clemson and TCU were the best, but both teams have a lot to replace.

Makes sense. Since we already established that Baker Mayfield has won the Oklahoma starting job, it stands to reason another Oklahoma quarterback, Justice Hansen, announced he was transferring.

$$$$$$. Let’s say you’re attending an SEC game. The home team wins in a huge upset. It’s a real grand time and fans start rushing the field. The fine from the conference celebrating on the field is going up “substantially,” but let’s hold our breath and find out if that will serve as a deterrent.

Not to be outdone, the Big 12 added a rule that bans excessive showing of replays that make the refs look bad, or something.

Texas is already super rich. Rumor has it Under Armour is about to make a huge offer to Texas to supplant Nike as the Longhorns’ uniform manufacturer. The purported figure of $150 million over 10 years would dwarf the $90 million deal Under Armour signed with Notre Dame, currently the richest contract in college sports.

Up to 29. Noted sports team enthusiast Kenny Chesney is now a lifelong NC State fan, on top of those 28 other teams he’s also a lifelong fan of.
