Australia might host bowl game and Big 12 vs. Pac-12 opener

Co-Big 12 champions Baylor could open the 2016 season in Australia against a Pac-12 opponent. The school is in the process of negotiating the game and it has not yet been finalized, David Ubben of Fox Sports Southwest is reporting. Sic 'Em Sports, Rivals.com's Baylor site, is reporting California is the likely opponent, perhaps in Sydney or Melbourne.

This may not be the only foray into Australia for college football. ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported in March that the Pac-12 is considering a bowl game in Melbourne for 2016.

Major American college football games have been played in other countries before, but rarely, with only a couple in Australia, both in the 1980s.

The two teams combined to score 86.5 points per game last season (Baylor ranked No. 1, Cal No. 11) and they’re both named the Bears, so it would at the very least appear to be a fun game, even if Baylor is currently far ahead of Cal in its program trajectory.

Baylor holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series between the two schools, but both of those wins came in the 1950s. The last time Cal and Baylor played, the Golden Bears won 70-22 in Berkeley.
