Ex-UCLA players defend coach involved in Diddy drama

Good morning! It’s your daily roundup of college football stuff.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Not necessarily every UCLA player, but a prominent former one and a former linebacker/special teamer have spoken up in defense of Bruins strength coach Sal Alosi, who squabbled with famous musician Sean “Diddy” Combs over the entertainer’s son (might be worth noting that Combs’ son is a UCLA special teamer, as well).

One of the two, ex-linebacker Todd Golper, writes that Diddy is a “helicopter parent,” which, well ...

As has been noted, Alosi is the former Jets coach who tripped a Dolphins player during a game.

Clemson’s in trouble. Left tackle Isaiah Battle declared for the NFL Supplemental Draft on Thursday, and his absence will cast a significant shadow onto the Tigers’ line situation. Battle started 11 games last year, and his likely replacement is a true freshman, Mitch Hyatt.

So much of the Tigers’ hopes this year are resting on the health of quarterback Deshaun Watson, which means any loss along the offensive line is a significant one.

BEES. Bill Connelly’s preview series moved on to Georgia Tech, who put together a surprise run to the Orange Bowl in 2014. Will there be a repeat performance in 2015?

Should we be taking them more seriously? When a team without a long history of success or without incredible recruiting rankings succeeds, we assume regression is coming. Should we? Or is the Ramblin’ Wreck, with an incredible option quarterback, a stellar line and a more experienced defense, ready to be the best team in the ACC?

Departures. Miami offensive lineman Taylor Gadbois was dismissed, meaning there will be even more turnover on the offensive line. Over at Nebraska, quarterback Johnny Stanton and wide receiver Glenn Irons have also left the team.

Not good. Three members of Florida’s 2015 recruiting class will probably never make it to Gainesville due to academic issues.

Really, really not good. Florida State freshman quarterback De’Andre Johnson has been suspended indefinitely after allegedly punching a woman at a bar.

Orange OSU vs. orange OSU. Oregon State and Oklahoma State have agreed to a home and home series in 2019 and 2020. This should be a really good series for both teams.

BYU to the Big 12? Well, not exactly, but the latest Big 12 news does have interesting ramifications for the Cougars.

Mississippi State’s No. 1. But who’s got the SEC’s second-best quarterback? Full rankings by And The Valley Shook.
