Of course Notre Dame and BYU should be eligible for the College Football Playoff

Good morning! It’s your daily digest of college football news.

Shots fired. Even after just one year of the College Football Playoff, everyone has opinions on how to change it for the better, whether it means expanding it to eight or 16 teams or getting rid of conference championship games.

Mizzou’s Gary Pinkel has a different suggestion: He, uh, wants Notre Dame and other independents to be ineligible.

The reasoning? They can’t win conferences, and conferences are important. But independents can demonstrate on the field that they’re good enough to rank in the top four, which is really all that matters.

Our Notre Dame site applies Pinkel’s reasoning to other arguments:

Pinkel on Russia: “We’ve been letting Russia get away with straddling the line between Europe and Asia for far too long. They get to have influence in way too many areas, politically, socially and economically. Time to divide Russia into a European sector and an Asian sector. I’m just trying to be fair, man.”

Independent BYU's doing fine

Utes moving up? Utah has turned into a pretty good Pac-12 team. Now what, asks Bill Connelly?

Oops! The ACC’s 2015 media guide is out, and apparently, the conference has had enough of football already.

Snyder says. Big 12 expansion is always a hot topic, and Kansas State coach Bill Snyder became the second major conference figure to support the league adding two more teams.

What the selection committee should be saying. A lot of the expansion talk is due to the perception that Big 12 teams might have a better chance to make the Playoff if it expanded. However, there’s a much easier solution for the Big 12.

Clemson and Georgia Tech are officially your ACC favorites.

Crootin’!

12th man. Texas A&M fans have an ongoing feud with the Seattle Seahawks over the “12th Man” title (it’s A&M’s, but the school sells it to the Seahawks as well). It’s a serious matter for Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin, who says he got into it with a Seahawks fan.

Mad at Madden. In an annual tradition, NFL rookies displayed a wide range of emotions when learning their Madden ratings for the upcoming year.

WVU has wings. Dana Holgorsen is always a treat at Big 12 Media Days, and in a fun interview with our Oklahoma State site, he revealed that he will have “somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000” Red Bulls this season. And then he got this treat.
