A new Town. USC confirms Ricky Town, one of the country’s top-rated freshman QBs, is headed elsewhere after battling for snaps in fall camp.
Blue chip freshman QB transferring from USC even before first season
Good morning! It’s your digest of what happened in college football this weekend.
Quarterbacks in clogged depth charts often transfer out, even former highly rated recruits. But they usually give it more than just a few weeks of practice. Town, a Southern California product and former Alabama commit, will draw plenty of interest.
Scrimmage time. With fall camp opening across the country, fans got their first (somewhat) live looks at their favorite teams since spring. Among the highlights:
- Oklahoma’s gonna put points on people, but Nebraska’s gotta get its run game fixed.
- Alabama’s defense is ahead of its offense, while Iowa’s defense is far, far ahead of its offense.
- Boise State’s QB race is even more confusing now, and the young Mizzou wide receivers appear to have a lot of potential.
- Arkansas’ passing game needs to improve, and Florida surprised its coach by being not awful.
- Baylor’s offense was (not surprisingly) efficient, Arizona State’s scrimmage was physical and Wisconsin has questions at linebacker and on the offensive line.
Dominating Dawgs. You’re going to overthink it, but don’t, says Bill Connelly: Georgia is the best team in the SEC East.
The country's most exciting big dudes. Watch lists are generally dumb, so the Piesman Trophy watch list is the one that matters.
Celebrity sons. Once a hotbed for the football-playing sons of musicians, the Pac-12 is running out of such players now that Snoop Dogg’s son has left UCLA football.
College football is coming and ESPN’s promo video will have you extremely hyped.
“Deep water.” Vanderbilt’s new uniforms feature lots of opportunities for rival jokes, because they’re Vanderbilt uniforms, but fans like them.
Troubles in Tallahassee. Former five-star recruit Matthew Thomas, a linebacker at Florida State, is ineligible for 2015.
Beasts of the East. It’s not just Ohio State. The Big Ten East is one of the best divisions in the country for top NFL prospects.
“Do not watch this Gators-themed rap video,” says a Florida fan, which means you should.
Michigan will wear 1974 throwback uniforms on the road this season.
That’s harsh? Houston coach Tom Herman says that some of his players “stink” and “don’t belong in Division I” at the moment.
Minny promotion. Jerry Kill is getting a raise and an extension through 2019 at Minnesota.
App State stunner, Round 2? Appalachian State has what it takes to pull off a big upset win over Clemson.
Prepping for Texas. Cal is moving inland from the mild Bay Area to prepare for the heat of Texas.
Remember the trick shots fad? Long snappers are doing it now. Here’s an example: From the stands, through the uprights and into a garbage can.
Crootin’ highlights:
- Minnesota athlete JD Spielman committed to Nebraska over the Gophers.
- Stanford picked up four-star cornerback Treyjohn Butler.
- Center Sean Auwae picked UCLA via Twitter video.
- Cal beat a number of Pac-12 foes for DE Evan Weaver.
- Washington State got a 2016 quarterback, and he is very tall.
- Four-star DT Karamo Dioubate picked Penn State over virtually everyone else.
