College sports can’t have player unions, so surely the problems will just fix themselves

Good morning! It’s your daily digest of college football stuff.

In a surprising decision, the National Labor Relations Board partially reversed a previous decision, ruling that Northwestern players cannot unionize.

Since there are so many different college teams with different circumstances -- this ruling would not have applied to public schools -- the board decided it was not within its jurisdiction. And so, in true Big Ten fashion, the NLRB punted.

This is good news for the NCAA, but unionization was the least of the organization’s worries. It’s bad news for those hoping to see players get things like better medical care.

Here’s a full timeline of the union story, and here’s why this decision/non-decision is frustrating.

The big preview. Bill Connelly’s 128-team preview series is done, capping it off with Alabama, which lost in the College Football Playoff but is still Alabama, the SEC’s most proven commodity.

Uniform judging. Zito Madu rated 13 new uniforms for this year with one criteria: lit or nah.

QB debate. Ohio State QBs Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett don’t want to share snaps. Cardale has gotten all the headlines this offseason, but the Land-Grant Holy Land staff thinks Barrett will play more.

Here’s what an apparel contract looks like. Adidas would pay Texas A&M half a million dollars for a Playoff title ... if that were to happen.

Coker conundrum. Alabama quarterback Jacob Coker will miss “several days” of practice with a minor foot injury.

The Saga Continues. Diddy says he is banned from UCLA practices, despite his son being on the team, after getting into a fight with a coach.

Mississippi State is going for a Guinness World Record in cowbell-ringing. Wait, how did they not already hold that?

Transferring USC blue chip quarterback Ricky Town has been linked to Florida’s coaching staff by multiple national writers.

Sounds like South Carolina’s QB situation is close to being set, with lightly experienced redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch likely starting.

Wardrobe malfunction. Florida State has two No. 8s on kick return, so Jalen Ramsey will allegedly change jerseys every time he goes from defense to special teams.

USC rising. Pacific Takes says Oregon and USC will make the Pac-12 title game, with the latter winning the conference and advancing to the Playoff.

Tantalizing Taysom. BYU quarterback Hill isn't just a great runner as a dual-threat quarterback, he's a legitimate passer.

Historic win. Former QB Stephen Garcia sat down with Garnet and Black to discuss South Carolina’s 2010 win over Florida that clinched the SEC East.

Ole Miss’ secret weapon. Exactly how Washington transfer Damore’ea Stringfellow adds to what’s already a pretty scary receiving corps.

Washington State’s air raid gets a big boost, with former four-star Clemson receiver recruit Ky Priester eligible immediately.
