This might not be the game of the week in college football, but it might as well be the game of the decade for Tennessee, which is hoping this is finally the game that will get the Volunteers’ program back on track. And the game has already provided some trash talk.
How to watch Oklahoma vs. Tennessee on TV or online, plus 3 things to know
Which team gets a big boost from the hype machine?
Sooner captain Eric Striker isn’t a fan of SEC hype, saying, “I don’t know why people blow gas up their ass all the time.” Bob Stoops downplayed the environment at Neyland Stadium. So this should be fun.
Both of these teams have question marks heading into this massive game, but both are also sleepers to make some noise in their respective divisions and conferences. Oklahoma is a slim road favorite, but the Sooners need to show that they can run the ball better than they did against Akron. Tennessee has its own problems. The Vols’ offense looked good in their opener against Bowling Green, but the defense has to be better against Oklahoma.
How to watch, stream and listen
TV: 6 p.m. ET, ESPN
Online streaming: WatchESPN
Three big things to know
1. Tennessee’s starting DT, Danny O’Brien, is suspended for this game. That could be the difference if Oklahoma gets the running game going. Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon combined for only 60 yards on 16 carries last week, and it’s hard to expect them to repeat that low level of production, even against improved competition.
2. Bob Stoops is definitely going to make a snide remark about the crowd, win or lose. Whether you like him or not, he’s been doing this for years and he’s just going to keep going.
3. Both of these teams are known for underachieving but have a lot of hype this year. The hype will go through the roof for the winner, while the loser will be labeled a disappointment.
