This has the potential to be a very, very good game ... in a couple of years. After decades of mediocrity, SMU might finally have itself a winner in coach Chad Morris, who rose up from the Texas high school ranks to become the offensive coordinator at Clemson and now the head coach at SMU. That was evident when the Mustangs scored more points in the first 10 minutes of this year’s season opener than they did through all of September last year.
How to watch SMU vs. TCU on TV or online, plus 3 things to know
Can the upstarts pull off the upset after falling short in Week 1?
But rebuilds take time, and SMU eventually succumbed to Baylor. The Mustangs are not on TCU level yet, but they’re hoping to become what the Horned Frogs have: a legitimate power conference team after rising from a smaller conference.
TCU is a popular pick to make the College Football Playoff this year after narrowly missing last year, and the Horned Frogs have some serious potential. That said, after a scare at Minnesota, they’ll have to be careful with SMU. No, SMU isn’t on TCU level right now, but the Mustangs are on a level where they can hang around. And if that happens, anything can happen.

Three big things to know
1. Both of these offenses are going to be really fun to watch, just like SMU-Baylor was one of the highlights of the opening weekend. SMU likes to air it out, while TCU has star do-it-all quarterback Trevone Boykin, who is looking more and more like an NFL quarterback every game.
2. That said, TCU wasn’t entirely impressive in its win against Minnesota, and for the Playoff selection, it’s not who you beat, it’s how you beat them. If the Horned Frogs can blow out SMU and handle them easily in the first half like a certain green and gold team to the south didn’t, well ...
3. DON’T GET HURT. TCU had great injury luck last season, and the advanced stats don’t love the Horned Frogs, suggesting that they were somewhat lucky in 2014. A game against an inferior opponent is no time to go all out if it’s unnecessary.
