Two weeks and two Hail Marys. It’s been a roller coaster past two weeks for the Cougars, who beat Nebraska in Lincoln and then beat Boise State at home, giving them arguably the best combination of wins in the country through two weeks. The tough schedule continues in Week 3, as the effects of independence dictate, with BYU’s visit to UCLA.
How to watch BYU vs. UCLA on TV or online, plus 3 things to know
MORE HAIL MARYS PLEASE!
BYU’s schedule is extremely tough, particularly for an independent that is on the edge of being the equivalent of a major conference team. From a schedule perspective, BYU is certainly major conference, though that also means it’s going to have a very hard time going undefeated and making the College Football Playoff.
The schedule gets even tougher with a visit to UCLA. The Bruins now look like Playoff contenders, and true freshman quarterback Josh Rosen looks like the real deal. While UCLA has enjoyed a renaissance under Jim Mora, it hasn’t truly been elite. Playoff-caliber teams don’t lose to BYU. The Bruins can’t afford to.

Three big things to know
1. How can Josh Rosen do? That’s the big question in a year without a top quarterback like Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston. Can Rosen win the Heisman? He showed up against a good Virginia defense, and now he has another opportunity to do that on a national stage.
2. Quarterback Tanner Mangum. On the other side is Mangum, for BYU. Mangum came in for star Taysom Hill after Hill left the Nebraska game (he is out for the year) and led the comeback. He also has the two Hail Mary throws. Mangum was a four-star recruit coming out of high school, and he certainly has potential. This will be the best defense he has faced so far.
3. A Hail Mary is going to happen again. Because destiny.
