Bobby Petrino took a baffling timeout that sealed an Auburn win over Louisville

What was Petrino thinking?

Louisville had the opportunity to get the ball back with a chance to tie Auburn in its 31-24 loss to the Tigers, but Bobby Petrino inexplicably called a timeout after an Auburn penalty — when the clock was already stopped — letting Auburn essentially run the clock out on its replayed third down.

Petrino told CBS he called a timeout because he thought, after the penalty, that there would be a clock run-off (a removal of 10 seconds from the game clock following certain penalties), so he would need to call a timeout going into the third-and-long. And in an interview after the game, he seemed to still think that was the case. However, the referee said during the game that there would be no run-off.
