The 2016 National Championship game, which ended in a 45-40 Alabama win over Clemson, was a classic, but not that many people tuned in to see it. The ratings were down 15 percent from last year’s Ohio State-Oregon National Championship.
ESPN’s National Championship TV ratings were down, but not as badly as New Year’s Eve Playoff
Ratings were down again in a disappointing College Football Playoff for viewers.

Source: Last night's CFP championship game pulled a 15.8 overnight rating on ESPN, down 15 percent from last year.
— John Ourand (@Ourand_SBJ) January 12, 2016 The ESPN broadcast for the title game drew a 15.8 overnight rating. The 16.0 rating combines all the Megacast options.
— Richard Deitsch (@richarddeitsch) January 12, 2016 It could have been worse. The College Football Playoff semifinals, both of which were blowouts and played on New Year’s Eve, were down more than 36 percent. It was a regrettable Playoff of ratings for both the College Football Playoff and ESPN, who have some bouncing back to do next season.
Still, these ratings were better than the ratings for the final three BCS Championship games. Moreover, with more and more people cutting the cord, the WatchESPN app got its best ratings ever, according to ESPN. So all things considered, it was a decent rebound from the semis.
