Stanford vs. Notre Dame 2016 odds: Irish only a small home favorite

The Stanford Cardinal visit the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in hopes of breaking their losing streak and improving on their 14-8-1 ATS mark in October.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Stanford Cardinal are 18-5 straight up and 14-8-1 against the spread in their last 23 games played in October. The Cardinal will try to avoid losing back-to-back games in October for the first time since 2009 with a road win this Saturday over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Stanford is a 3-point road underdog on Saturday night at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. In the last seven games between these two teams, Stanford has won five times.

The Cardinal started the 2016 season off in their usual dominant fashion, going 3-0 SU and ATS with wins over USC and UCLA and a defense that was allowing only 12 points per game.

But in back-to-back blowout losses on the road against Washington and at home against Washington State, Stanford couldn’t get anything going on either side of the ball and was outscored 86-22. With Christian McCaffrey’s status for Saturday’s game in doubt, the Cardinal are going to need to get back on track defensively to keep this game close.

In their last 19 games coming off a loss, the Cardinal are 17-2 SU per the OddsShark College Football Database.

Betting Line / Total: Notre Dame -3 / 55 Points

Trend: Notre Dame is 10-3 ATS in its last 13 games in October.

Trend: Stanford is 8-0-1 ATS in its last nine games after losing as a favorite.

Notre Dame might have made the College Football Playoff last season with a road win in the final game of their regular season against Stanford, but a Stanford go-ahead field goal as time expired crushed the Fighting Irish’s hopes.

Now far outside of the playoff picture with a 2-4 SU and ATS record through the first half of the season, Notre Dame’s biggest motivator in this game will likely come in the form of revenge. The Fighting Irish are 9-3 SU in their last 12 games after losing the previous game against their opponent.

Saturday’s total is set at 55 points. The UNDER is 13-4 in Stanford’s last 17 games on the road.

Each of the last four games in this head-to-head series have been decided by a touchdown or less. With both teams already out of the running for a playoff spot, pride will be the main component of what should be a highly competitive rivalry game on Saturday.
