Miami vs. Virginia Tech 2016 odds: Hokies favored to give Canes 3rd loss in a row

The Miami Hurricanes will try to snap out of a losing streak Thursday night against Virginia Tech, but they’ll have to do it as underdogs at the sportsbooks.

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Hurricanes are just 6-8 straight up and against the spread in their last 14 games against ACC opponents. The Hurricanes will try to turn things around against a divisional foe this Thursday night visiting the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Miami is a 6-point road underdog in Blacksburg at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. In their last seven games coming off a loss, the Hurricanes are 6-1 ATS.

In their first four games of the season, the Hurricanes averaged 47 points per game on offense and allowed only 11 points per game on defense, cruising to a 4-0 SU and ATS start.

While the defense has continued to play well over the last two weeks, allowing 20 points to Florida State and 20 points to North Carolina, the offense has lost its way with just 16 points per game in those two games.

Miami will be an underdog for the first time this season on Thursday. In 12 games as an underdog of six points or more since 2010, Miami is 3-9 SU and 6-6 ATS, per the OddsShark College Football Database.

Betting Line / Total: Virginia Tech -6 / 51 Points

Trend: Miami is 4-1 ATS in its last five games against Virginia Tech.

Trend: Virginia Tech is 21-9 SU in its last 30 games on Thursday.

Virginia Tech seemed to find its groove after a 45-24 neutral-site loss to Tennessee, putting together a 3-0 SU and ATS run in which the Hokies outscored their opponents 137 to 20. But as a 23-point road favorite against the lowly Syracuse Orange last Saturday, the Hokies were stunned in a 31-17 loss.

The game was a clear letdown spot between big games at North Carolina and at home against Miami, but the outright loss was still quite surprising. The Hokies are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight games coming off back-to-back home wins.

Saturday’s total is set at 51 points. The UNDER is 10-3 in the last 13 games between Miami and Virginia Tech.

Both of these teams have looked like legitimate contenders at certain points this season, but both have also picked up two losses and shown vulnerabilities against quality opponents. With the battle for the ACC Coastal Division looking like a potential dogfight down the stretch, neither of these teams can afford a loss in this important rivalry game.
