Things couldn’t be more opposite in terms of what Georgia Tech is playing for. At this point, with a rough 5-4 record on the season, Paul Johnson’s team is looking to become bowl-eligible. Last year, the Yellow Jackets sat at home during bowl season, after a 3-9 regular season record. Three big things to know
1. This game has been huge for ACC divisional titles in the past: These two teams have met just 13 times total, but the vast majority of them have been quite important for the ACC Coastal race. Since 2005, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech have accounted for nine of the 11 division titles. This year, that number will increase if the Hokies can clinch the division with a win.
2. Virginia Tech’s offense has been high-scoring this season: The Hokies have averaged 39 points per game in their seven wins so far this season. Overall, they have managed to outscore opponents 312-182 in 2016. Much of the Hokies’ offensive success comes from quarterback Jerod Evans. He is Virginia Tech’s leading rusher on the year, accounting for 533 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also currently just four touchdown passes shy of breaking Tyrod Taylor’s school record of 24, which was set back in 2010.
3. Georgia Tech teams struggle on the road: Georgia Tech teams under head coach Paul Johnson are 2-10 on the road against AP Top 25 opponents. The Yellow Jackets are 1-3 in Blacksburg when playing a ranked Virginia Tech team, as well.
