Rutgers submits its nominee for the worst college football play of the year

Holy hell.

Michigan State lost seven games in a row coming into this week. It turns out that playing Rutgers is the perfect antidote to whatever was ailing the Spartans.

Nominally, this is an attempt by Rutgers quarterback Giovanni Rescigno to throw a pass. He trips up on the leg of a play-actioning running back, and his throw falls to the ground.

It happens sometimes, I guess. But the world makes more sense if you view this play as a deliberate attempt to pack the entire essence of Rutgers football into one metaphor.

This is the most accurate assessment I’ve seen so far:

It looks almost as though the quarterback is attempting to shot put the football down the field. If you’re rooting for Rutgers, that might be a soothing interpretation.

The Scarlet Knights trailed the Spartans at halftime, 35-0. That ran their score for the year against teams from Michigan to a combined 113-0. And counting.
