Texas Tech lost an 89-point shootout to Oklahoma State on a missed extra point
Ouch.
That’s a terrible moment for Texas Tech, as steady kicker Clayton Hatfield (nine of 10 field goal attempts made this season and 14 of 16 last year, as a freshman) booted an extra point ball that appeared to lean slightly toward the holder and sailed wide right. The FS1 announce crew was adamant that blame fell on the entire kicking unit, rather than just Hatfield.
That miss kept the score at 45-44 in favor of No. 13 Oklahoma State with just over a minute to go. Quinton White Jr. had run in the would-be tying touchdown.
After the kick, TTU and OSU engaged in a clock-management duel, as the Cowboys cruised near the Red Raiders’ goal line. Texas Tech called a timeout and, at one point, appeared to be trying to let OSU score in order to have the ball back with an eight-point deficit (it’s not easy to tell when TTU’s defense is intentionally trying to allow the other team to score, but no attempts at tackles were made during a couple red zone snaps), but Cowboys running back Chris Carson wisely slid down before the goal line after securing a first down.
The Vegas over/under scoring total for this game hovered around 87 points, which the two teams cleared on TTU’s final touchdown.
OSU QB Mason Rudolph finished the game with 395 yards through the air, to 359 by TTU’s Patrick Mahomes.
The win keeps the Cowboys’ Big 12 and New Year’s Six hopes alive.
