Ohio State’s offense wasn’t having a great day against Michigan. With no offensive points scored and consistent stalling out, it had been been a frustrating day. But the Buckeyes got some help from their defense to finally get on the board.
Here’s Ohio State’s 7th pick-six of the year in a game they needed defense to beat Michigan
They did it again.
At this point, Ohio State’s defense is starting to remind us of Alabama’s with its ability to generate points autonomously. Not only is it another coup for the Buckeyes on D, but DB Malik Hooker grabbed himself another pick-six.
But you can see here how a defense works in concert, and how pressure can literally build defensive diamonds.
The Buckeyes end up blitzing six players, and by walking up a linebacker at the snap to take care of the center, it’s five on five at the line of scrimmage.
The only person left is the running back in pass protection, but the late blitzing linebacker from the second level feigns blitzing to the right of the center (where the running back is going) but ends up walking through the gaping hole to the center’s left. There’s no shot for Michigan’s RB, and the pressure on the QB forces the bad throw whigh Ohio State used to get their first lead of the game.
