Mississippi State finished the regular season a lousy 5-7. But the Bulldogs were fortunate to see the emergence of dual-threat sophomore quarterback Nick Fitzgerald. In a 55-20 Egg Bowl win against Ole Miss on Saturday, Fitzgerald thrived.
After blowing out Ole Miss, Dan Mullen said something pretty funny about his QB’s recruitment
Yes, this is fine. And yes, FCS Chattanooga might be better than Mississippi State this year.

He was 8 of 17 passing, but with three touchdowns and no interceptions. As a runner, he carried 14 times for an outrageous 258 yards and two touchdowns. Someone asked MSU coach Dan Mullen which teams he had to recruit Fitzgerald against in 2014.
“On Nick Fitzgerald? UT-Chattanooga. They’re an excellent football team, an FCS playoff team,” Mullen responded.
The best thing is the way Mullen pulls his victory cigar close to his mouth as he’s answering, then bites it and poses after enunciating “Chattanooga.” And Mullen is right that the Mocs are a good team. They beat Weber State on Saturday in the FCS playoffs’ first round, and they’ll play No. 5 Sam Houston State next weekend.
In fact,, Mississippi State lost to Alabama by 48 this year, while the Mocs lost to Alabama by only 28. Against FCS Samford, MSU’s margin of victory was 15, while Chattanooga’s was 20. The Mocs’ margin against common opponents was 25 points better than MSU’s, so Mullen’s assessment of the Mocs is definitely a true one.
