Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason danced on the sidelines while beating Tennessee

He’s a happy camper.

Early in the year, Vanderbilt’s Derek Mason was near the top of the heap of coaches we all assumed would probably be fired.

At the halfway point of the season, Vandy was 2-4 with hapless-looking losses to Florida, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, and South Carolina.

But they rebounded and finished the season 6-6, beating Tennessee in the season finale, 45-34. To say Mason was just a little excited would be an understatement.

He had things to say, too, both to SEC Network ...

... and to the crowd, which still included some Tennessee fans.

The win against Tennessee was certainly the biggest, but the Commodores beat Ole Miss and Georgia as well. Those are teams firmly in the “never lose to Vanderbilt” classification, no matter how good either squad is coming into the game.

Mason gets a lot of credit for getting Vandy going in the right direction and bowl eligible for the eighth time in school history.

Not bad for a guy we figured would be canned at the halfway pole.
