Nebraska QB Tommy Armstrong Jr. returns to stadium in hospital scrubs after being carted off

Armstrong looked to be in terrible shape, but then this story took an uplifting turn.

Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. left the Huskers’ game at Ohio State on Saturday night with an apparent head injury.

He was alert afterward, though, and somehow returned from a hospital to jog back onto the field and see his teammates later.

He returned to Ohio Stadium in hospital scrubs.

Clearly, Armstrong looks OK.

But things were pretty scary when he got hurt in the second quarter, just a bit more than an hour before returning to Ohio Stadium.

Armstrong was forced out of bounds on a run, and he came down headfirst on the turf.

Medical staff immediately tended to Armstrong, and they cut off his pads and then carried him off the field on a stretcher and cart. ESPN reported police were escorting Armstrong’s father to the field to see him, and the network’s cameras showed Armstrong’s girlfriend and a Nebraska teammate consoling each other.

Nebraska said Armstrong was briefly knocked unconscious but moving his extremities and talking while on the field. ESPN’s cameras showed Armstrong being taken to Ohio State’s medical center for evaluation.

After Armstrong went down, staffers from both Ohio State and Nebraska worked on helping him. Armstrong was immediately motionless after going to the ground.

Here’s the immediate aftermath of the play:

Ohio State players joined Armstrong’s teammates in wishing him well as he was about to leave on a cart. It was a solemn, scary scene.

Armstrong’s father held his hand for a moment, and the quarterback briefly had his eyes open. He also gave a thumbs-up, and the crowd responded with cheers. Fans chanted Armstrong’s name as he was being loaded into an ambulance.

Things looked pretty bad. That Armstrong was able to run back onto the field so soon, while shocking, is wonderful to see.
