Poinsettia Bowl odds: BYU gets nod as betting favorite over Wyoming

The BYU Cougars will try to convert as big favorites and continue their solid betting trend against the Wyoming Cowboys in the Poinsettia Bowl.

The BYU Cougars are 7-0 straight up and 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games against the Wyoming Cowboys. The Cougars are favored to extend their winning streak against the Cowboys on Wednesday, December 21 in the Poinsettia Bowl.

BYU is a 9-point favorite in San Diego at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Over the team’s last 11 games as a favorite of a touchdown or more, the Cougars are 11-0 SU and 7-4 ATS.

The Cougars covered the spread in each of their first four games, but picked up only one win over that stretch in an 18-16 nail-biter against Arizona. But as the season wore on, BYU picked up momentum, finishing the year on a 7-1 SU and 5-3 ATS run. The defense was particularly impressive in the month of November, allowing only 7.3 points per game across a season-ending stretch of 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS.

In their last three postseason appearances, the Cougars are 0-3 SU and ATS per the OddsShark College Football Database. BYU’s last bowl win came in its first appearance in the Poinsettia Bowl with a 23-6 win over San Diego State in 2012.

Betting Line / Total: BYU -9 / 57.5 Points

Trend: BYU is 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS in its last seven games against Wyoming.

Trend: Wyoming is 7-2 ATS in its last nine games.

Fueled by an excellent rushing game, Wyoming finished in the Top 25 nationally in scoring offense this season averaging 37.1 points per game.

While sophomore quarterback Josh Allen had a strong season with 2,996 passing yards, 485 rushing yards and 33 total touchdowns, the star of the offense was junior running back Brian Hill. Hill ranks fourth in the nation in rushing yards with 1,767 and fourth in rushing touchdowns with 21. The Cowboys ended their regular season with a 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS skid.

Wednesday’s total is set at 57.5 points. The UNDER is 6-1 in BYU’s last seven games.

Wyoming will be making its first bowl appearance since 2011 and just its third one overall since 2004. BYU will be trying to snap a three-bowl losing streak, so motivation won’t be an issue for either side in the Poinsettia Bowl. The Cougars rank eighth in the nation in rushing defense allowing 108.4 yards per game; containing Brian Hill would be the key to a BYU victory.
