WMU player who earned scholarship with special teams play forces fumble in MAC Championship

Big moment for Trevor Sweeney.

Western Michigan’s Trevor Sweeney is a special teams stalwart, and he proved it during the MAC Championship. Sweeney leveled this big hit to force a fumble and get his team in business early.

This is probably the second biggest special teams play of his career, however. In 2015, he was awarded a scholarship when the paperwork was taped to a football and kicked toward him during practice.

Sweeney is from nearby Mattawan, Mich., and said after the moment how important it was to be a true part of the team with an official scholarship.

“Kalamazoo’s always been my home,” Sweeney told MLive in 2013 before enrolling at Western Michigan. “I’ve always dreamed about playing at Western, ever since the time we played at Waldo [Stadium] as Rocket football kids.”

The Broncos are certainly happy to have him as part of the team after this big play.
