UConn is firing head coach Bob Diaco, and timing it just right to save a few bucks. Shortly after the firing, chatter began that program FBS architect Randy Edsall could return. And now it’s done:
Randy Edsall returns to UConn 6 years after leaving for Maryland. Weird!
The most prominent coach in Huskies football history (there’s not much of it) is back.

Edsall led UConn into Division I-AA in 1999 and then into the Big East, building toward maybe the weirdest BCS bowl bid of all time: an 8-4 appearance in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl. That vaulted him to the Maryland job, where he went 22-34 and got fired. He’s spent some time as a Detroit Lions staffer since.
Now we get the weird prospect of a school welcoming back the coach who took it to its greatest heights, but fans kind of shrugging. It “would not be a horrible choice in a vacuum,” wrote The UConn Blog, which seems a little more excited about this idea:
One weird thing: UConn’s biggest problem during the Diaco years (and some other years) was a lack of offense. Programs often swing toward the opposite coaching style while making a chance, and, um, let’s just say Edsall’s teams have rarely been known for lighting up scoreboards.
