This year’s list of Heisman Trophy finalists is 40 percent Oklahoma Sooner.
Heisman finalists Dede Westbrook and Baker Mayfield shared a cool moment after getting the news
Westbrook and Mayfield wouldn’t be here without each other, after all.

OU quarterback Baker Mayfield and receiver Dede Westbrook are part of a five-man field that will visit New York for Saturday’s Heisman ceremony (8 p.m. ET, ESPN). When they got the good news, the QB and his receiver got to share a moment. Here’s that, plus Westbrook’s initial reaction upon hearing his own name called:
Westbrook and Mayfield are both pretty clearly excited to be going, and each spends time explaining to the other why it should be his teammate who wins.
“I get to go with you to New York,” Mayfield tells Westbrook over video, adding, “I’ll help you write your speech.” And Westbrook defers that it will be Mayfield who wins, requesting, “Bring your best khakis.” (I hope Mayfield indeed wears khakis. The Heisman ceremony could stand to be a bit less haughty.)
Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, with his 51 total touchdowns, is the favorite to win. But Mayfield and Westbrook both have strong cases to make, and it probably helps that their Sooners finished on a nine-game win streak and won the Big 12.
Mayfield threw for 3,669 yards, 38 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, with yards-per-attempt and passer ratings that currently lead the sport. Of Mayfield’s passes, 74 and 1,465 yards’ worth went to Westbrook, including 16 touchdowns.
The scary thing here, if you’re a non-OU Big 12 school, is that Mayfield’s coming back next year. Westbrook’s a redshirt senior, so to watch him play beyond the Sugar Bowl, you’ll have to tune in on Sundays instead of Saturdays. That they get to share this experience is awesome, even if neither of them wins.
