Georgia apologizes for giving Ludacris $65,000, condoms and 2 bottles of his own cognac

Ludacris got some Real Good Lovin’ from the University of Georgia. Here’s the full list of groceries.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

It cost the University of Georgia $65,000, one run to the supermarket and a box of condoms to get Ludacris to perform for 15 minutes before its spring football game, according to a contract received via an Open Records request.

The school didn’t have a performer signed until just two days before the event, and the late notice gave the rapper an opportunity to get, well, whatever he could think of -- including two bottles of his own label cognac (though maybe this is all standard for an artist of his standing).

He wasn’t going to put on a full-length concert, but the rapper must have thought he’d be thirsty just the same, because he requested enough liquids to hydrate the Bulldogs starting offense. A box of green tea, a gallon of cranberry juice, a gallon of orange juice, a case of coconut water, two cases of Snapple, low sodium V8 juices, two cases of Gatorade, two cases of water and 12 juice boxes were agreed to be sent to his room.

An iron and ironing board, several bottles of alcohol, two packs of double- and triple-A batteries, six t-shirts, a hair brush and a rechargeable toothbrush round out the rather lengthy grocery list.

It must be nice earning $4,333 a minute.

May 26 update: UGA’s AD has expressed regret:

“I do want to take this opportunity to apologize to our board for mistakes we made with certain aspects of the details of an entertainment agreement,” McGarity said. “Few things in my professional life have bothered me more than this situation. There are no reruns in life so we need to turn the page, learn from our mistakes and do everything we can to make sure errors of this nature do not reoccur.”

Head coach Kirby Smart has previously called the whole matter a “distraction.”
