Former Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman is the subject of a Waco police investigation into a sexual assault allegation made against him on Sunday. Oakman was expected to be picked in the middle rounds of April’s NFL Draft.
A few things to know about the sexual assault investigation of Baylor’s Shawn Oakman

A few things everyone should know:
- This is not an arrest at this time, let alone a conviction.
- Baylor’s series of headlines in this area remains especially awful. The entire university failed a student who became the victim of transfer player Sam Ukwuachu, and another former student filed a lawsuit against the school and head coach Art Briles, saying he ignored allegations against former player Tevin Elliott. BU’s reaction to these and some non-football stories has not been public enough for most people.
- Oakman was likewise a transfer player who’d gotten in trouble elsewhere, technically. New Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien booted him amid PSU’s larger scandal after a woman caught Oakman trying to steal a sandwich. It would stand to reason that his confrontation with her -- the 6’9 lineman admits to grabbing her wrist in order to get his card back -- concerned the coaching staff more than the sandwich itself.
- Campus sexual assault is not just a Baylor problem. It’s an everywhere problem, for a lot of reasons. Baylor has as big a responsibility as anybody when it comes to finding solutions, of course.
