Tennessee hasn’t beaten Florida since the year Facebook launched, and 16 more amazing facts

It’s Florida-Tennessee week, and with it comes talk about the streak. The Gators currently hold an 11-game win streak over the Volunteers.

If you really think about it, 11 years is a pretty long time, so I decided to do a little research to see just how much has changed since that 30-28 Tennessee victory over Florida on Sept. 18, 2004.

And let’s just say, it’s been a while.

1. In 2004, the Billboard No. 1 single was “Goodies” by Ciara featuring Petey Pablo: What’s even weirder is that Ciara’s now-husband, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, was only 16 years old at the time. (!)

2. The hit show Lost debuted on ABC. The show would go on to win 10 Emmys and be nominated for 51 before the series finale in 2010. That was when the world met Cam Newton, a QB Florida really, really missed that year.

3. USC’s 2004 national title wasn’t taken away yet. Remember, that’s the one the NCAA stripped the Trojans of in 2010 after USC’s improper benefits scandal. Sorry, USC fans.

4. Facebook launched. The social media tool you use at 2 a.m. to complain about your favorite college football team after one too many was only a few months old at the time.

5. Lamar Jackson was only seven years old. The 2016 Heisman favorite was probably still hurdling over defenders just as he did in high school, though.

6. Only three FBS head coaches still have the same jobs as they had in ‘04. Crazy, right? Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, and TCU’s Gary Patterson are the only ones.

7. The iPhone wasn’t even invented yet. Hey, but at least we had the iPod Mini, available in assorted colors!

8. This was the year we watched Ken Jennings kill it on Jeopardy! for, like, five months straight.

9. The Boston Red Sox “Curse of the Bambino” was broken. The Sox won their first World Series since 1918. Honestly, this doesn’t even seem all that long ago.

10. Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction.

11. Mean Girls was released. Okay, now this just makes me feel old.

12. Malice at The Palace: Ron Artest has since changed his name to Metta World Peace, and according to his former teammate Stephen Jackson, Metta has since become friends with the fan who started the brawl.

13. Boston College wasn’t in the ACC yet. In fact, this was way before the latest wave of conference realignment. Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, and Texas A&M were still in the Big 12. The Big East still existed in football, as did the WAC. Louisville, Cincinnati, Houston, and TCU were still in Conference USA. (!)

Tennessee is currently favored by 8 points this week. That’s the most they’ve been favored by in Neyland since 2002, when they were 5.5-point favorites. They wound up losing that one, 30-13.
