Wisconsin vs. Michigan State odds: Spartans favored in likely slugfest

The favored Michigan State Spartans host the Wisconsin Badgers in a Big Ten showdown between ranked teams on Saturday afternoon.

Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

The Michigan State Spartans are 4-0 straight up and 3-1 against the spread in their last four home games against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Spartans will look for a fifth straight home win over the Badgers this Saturday afternoon in East Lansing.

Michigan State is a 5-point home favorite at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Badgers are just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games against Big Ten opponents.

The Spartans jumped into the Top 10 of the AP Top 25 poll this week, climbing to No. 8 after defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 36-28.

One game can do a lot to change the tone of a season; while many were expecting this to be a transitional year for the Spartans, Michigan State suddenly looks like a legitimate threat in the Big Ten with games against Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State all coming at home this season.

The Spartans are 11-1 SU in their last 12 games against opponents with winning records. Since the start of the 2013 season, Michigan State is 11-1 SU and 7-5 ATS in 12 home games against Big Ten opponents per the OddsShark College Football Database.

Betting Line / Total: Michigan State -5 / 42.5 Points

Trend: Michigan State is 3-0-1 ATS in its last four games against its conference.

Trend: Wisconsin is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games against its conference.

The Badgers survived a scare last Saturday at home against Georgia State, trailing 17-13 in the fourth quarter before eventually coming away with a 23-17 victory.

The ugly performance in what was supposed to be a simple tune-up game dropped Wisconsin to No. 11 in the AP Top 25 poll, but the Badgers can quickly regain their spot in the Top 10 with a road win this week. Wisconsin is 3-1 SU and ATS in its last four games as an underdog and 10-1 SU in its last 11 games on the road.

Saturday’s total is set at 42.5 points. The OVER is 9-2 in the last 11 games between the Spartans and the Badgers.

Wisconsin’s win over LSU and Michigan State’s win over Notre Dame could be indicators of how deep the Big Ten is this season. Ohio State and Michigan won’t have an easy path to a conference title, and the winner of this game could find itself firmly in the race as the season progresses.
