Stanford vs. UCLA 2016 odds: Cardinal dominating against the spread in this series

The Stanford Cardinal will try to continue their recent dominance over the UCLA Bruins this Saturday as small road betting favorites.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Stanford Cardinal are 8-0 straight up and 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games against the UCLA Bruins. The Cardinal hope to extend their winning streak over the Bruins to nine this Saturday night at the Rose Bowl.

Stanford is a 3-point road favorite in Pasadena at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. In seven meetings between these two teams since 2010, the Cardinal have won six games by two touchdowns or more.

Going off as a 7.5-point favorite last Saturday at home against the USC Trojans, Stanford physically dominated the game on both sides of the ball in a 27-10 victory. With the win and cover, Stanford improved to 14-1 SU and 12-3 ATS over its last 15 games.

Quarterback Ryan Burns hasn’t had to do much through the Cardinal’s first two games of the season thanks to the explosiveness of Christian McCaffrey and the strength of the defense, but that could change in his first career road start this Saturday.

The Cardinal are 11-1 SU and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games against teams with winning records and 12-1 SU and 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games against Pac-12 opponents per the OddsShark College Football Database.

Betting Line / Total: Stanford -3 / 46.5 Points

Trend: Stanford is 8-0 SU and 7-1 ATS in its last eight games against UCLA.

Trend: UCLA is 0-5 ATS in its last five games.

In 2015, UCLA faded down the stretch after starting the season off 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS, going 4-5 SU and 3-6 ATS over its final nine games.

The Bruins were supposed to take a step forward in sophomore quarterback Josh Rosen’s second year, but so far the team has looked underwhelming with a loss to Texas A&M and a narrow victory over BYU. UCLA is 2-3 SU and 0-5 ATS over its last five games.

Saturday’s total is set at 46.5 points. The UNDER is 6-1 in Stanford’s last seven road games at UCLA.

If the Bruins can find a way to win at home this week, they would both start their conference season off with a win and end Stanford’s dominance over them in one fell swoop. But to do so, UCLA will need to come up with an answer for McCaffrey, who torched the Bruins for 243 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns in Stanford’s 56-35 win over UCLA last year.
