Clemson has done it. The Tigers beat the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide on this gorgeous throw from Deshaun Watson on first and goal to wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, who was pretty wide open in the end zone.
Here’s Clemson’s game-winning touchdown that beat Alabama
The Tigers got revenge.
Is that a pick by his teammate to spring him open? It looks like one, and QB Deshaun Watson even referred to it as “a pick” immediately after the game. Now pick plays can be legal, as long as there is no offensive pass interference. In the play above, the defender initiates the contact, so it can’t be classified as offensive pass interference. Essentially, since the defender initiated the contact, so that contact is not the responsibility of the receiver.
Another interesting factor to this pick play is that it looks eerily similar to one the Tide used themselves to beat LSU in overtime in 2014.
Clemson was helped by an Alabama pass interference call which got the Tiger offense deep into Alabama territory, which ultimately set up the score. Watson didn’t have quite the game that he did last year, but in the fourth quarter he threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
