One of the most unforgettable moments of last year’s National Championship between Alabama and Clemson came when Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban uncharacteristically called an onside kick in the fourth quarter. The call helped set up a Bama score, so the decision definitely paid off.
Bama beat Clemson with an onside kick. The Tigers’ revenge included one of their own
Yep, that happened.
After the play, both coaches had very different reactions, expectedly.
Fast forward almost a year later, and Clemson called an onside kick of its own in the rematch between these two teams in this year’s National Championship at the very end of the thrilling game. It worked in Clemson’s favor, too.
Now, this onside kick came with one second left, and was called to avoid a Bama run back on a kickoff, but hey, it was an onside kick nonetheless. Revenge!
The kick was easily recovered by Clemson, but the play was reviewed to ensure how much time was left on the clock, which was just a second. That gave Clemson enough time to just kneel down and seal its second-ever National Championship victory.
So yes, it’s Clemson giving Bama a taste of its own medicine, although the circumstances of the play calls are a bit different. Still counts as an onside kick, though!
