No. 2 Clemson beat No. 1 Alabama 35-31 on Monday night to give the Tigers their second-ever national championship in school history. The game ended in thrilling fashion, with quarterback Deshaun Watson leading a nine-play, 68-yard touchdown drive, highlighted by a last-second touchdown throw to receiver Hunter Renfrow.
Church sign invites Clemson fans to make good on their 4th quarter promises
The pastor tells us he plans to wear an orange bowtie on Sunday.
On Tuesday, the day after the big victory, Piedmont United Methodist Church, which is located in Piedmont, S.C., reminded any fans who made some promises during the Tigers’ final drive what time service was that day.
SB Nation spoke Wednesday with the church’s pastor, Rev. Matthew Greer, who said the original idea came from a church who made a similar sign after the Chicago Cubs won the World Series last October.
“I feel in love with [Chicago Cubs Infielder Ryne Sandberg as a second grader, so I kept up with the Cubs throughout. Of course this year, when that [World Series] happened,” Greer told SB Nation via phone, “One of my buddies sent me a text from a church, I’m assuming in the Chicago area, that had something kind of similar to that. And it really, I took that and wanted to use it more as a spoof than theology, and just kind of to spoof all of those times where, whether it be sports or whether it be relationships, or whatever, the many times that we go and say: ‘God, if you do this, I’ll go and do this.’ And just to kind of spoof that.”
Greer added that his congregation is a good mix of both Clemson and South Carolina fans, and it even has a pretty good amount of Georgia fans in the mix.
“We will be preaching the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Greer said of his message on Sunday morning. “And not that of Dabo [Swinney] even though I do love that guy a lot.”
“I will wear an orange bow tie. And I’m sure there will be some high-fives during passing of the peace.”
One of the coolest parts of this sign is the usage of Clemson’s #AllIn slogan, and the fact that the number 10 rhymes with that, too.
I think we we can all appreciate the creativity that went into this sign that was put up a day after one of the biggest wins Clemson has had in quite awhile.
