You can get free food just by saying ‘Outback Bowl.’ Here’s how.

If you like onions, root for Florida. If you like shrimp, root for Iowa. If you’re conflicted, you’ll win either way.

Since the 2013 season’s Outback Bowl, the game has assigned appropriately themed mascots to the two teams participating in the game: Coconut Shrimp and Bloomin’ Onion.

There is a great and tasty element to this, aside from having actual Coconut Shrimp and Bloomin’ Onions roaming along the sidelines, which would rule.

You see, each year, this bowl game comes with the lovely tradition of Outback Steakhouse offering a free appetizer, chosen according to whichever team wins the game. It’s available next day, for one day.

This year, Florida is Bloomin’ Onion and Iowa is Coconut Shrimp.

Depending on which appetizer you like more, you should cheer for that team. I’m team Bloomin’ Onion, which is unrelated to me being a Florida graduate.

So, how can you capitalize on this free food? It’s easy.

Details from Outback’s website:

Selection of complimentary appetizer depends on the winning team at the 2017 Outback Bowl football game scheduled for 1/2/2017. The Bloomin’ Onion offer will be valid if the SEC team (Florida Gators) wins and the Coconut Shrimp offer will be valid if the Big Ten team (Iowa Hawkeyes) wins. Say “Outback Bowl” to your server to receive the offer. Limit one complimentary appetizer per table/per check. Offer valid at participating Outback Steakhouse restaurants on 1/3/2017 for lunch or dinner (dine-in only).

This game has an SEC and a Big Ten opponent each year. Outback assigns the Bloomin’ Onion to the SEC opponent and the Coconut Shrimp to the Big Ten team.

Currently, the Bloomin’ Onion teams have a 3-1 advantage over Coconut Shrimp, with wins in 2013, 2014, and 2016.

  • 2013: South Carolina 33 (Bloomin’ Onion), Michigan 28
  • 2014: LSU 21 (Bloomin’ Onion), Iowa 14
  • 2015: Wisconsin 34 (Coconut Shrimp), Auburn 31
  • 2016: Tennessee 45 (Bloomin’ Onion), Northwestern 6

We’ll see which free appetizer we’ll all be enjoying on Tuesday.
