Auburn’s season began with a a 1-3 record, putting head coach Gus Malzahn on the hot seat. The Tigers then proceeded to win their next six games, including a victory over No. 18 LSU and a 56-3 rout of No. 17 Arkansas. But a 13-7 loss to Georgia and a 30-12 loss in the Iron Bowl brought their record to 8-4 on the season.
The Sooners would go on to win their final nine games to win the Big 12 title, but a two-loss conference champ wasn’t enough for a Playoff bid. So they’ve joined the Tigers in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl on Monday.
OU quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 3,600 yards, along with a whopping 38 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. With a good game, he’ll set the all-time FBS single-season passer efficiency record, currently owned by Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson for his 191.8 mark during the 2011 season. Mayfield enters at 197.8.
Auburn, meanwhile, had quarterback Sean White back healthy, after he was banged up towards the end of the season. But White go down injured and not return after reportedly breaking his arm in the second quarter.
