Deshaun Watson (yes, the QB) pinned Alabama deep with a punt that led to a Clemson TD

Quarterback or special teamer?

On fourth and one from Alabama’s 46, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson lined up under center, and it appeared as if the Tigers were going for it. Instead, the Tigers decided to punt, and Watson was the one who did the honors. The punt was a pretty good one that went 38 yards.

The punt was downed inside Alabama’s five-yard line, so it was a solid play by Watson. The poor field position forced Alabama to punt after getting just seven yards on the drive. The punt was a poor one by J.K. Scott and it was downed on Alabama’s 42. Clemson was able to put together a quick four-yard touchdown drive to pull within three.

The punt, according to Clemson’s official stats, was Watson’s first one all season, so seeing Watson do this is pretty impressive from the Heisman finalist. Kudos to Dabo Swinney for calling this play, which obviously looked like the Tigers were going to go for it for a second there.
