Catches like this one come around every so often: about once a year? Maybe a little less? They’re exceedingly rare, and we got another one this week:
Do you like absurd catches with the ball pinned to a guy’s back? Ole Miss has the latest
These catches are always brilliant.

That’s Ole Miss receiver D.K. Metcalf hauling in a 34-yard touch pass from Shea Patterson down the sideline against Vanderbilt on Saturday.
It’s shades of this, from 2005 by Alabama’s Tyrone Prothro:
And also this, last year by Ohio State’s Noah Brown:
And this, by Stanford’s Francis Owusu in 2015:
These kinds of catches — with the ball pinned to the back, or the back of the head, of a defender — are excellent. They are not in the “I have never seen this before and will never see it again” class, but the degree of coordination required to complete them is amazing. Most players who make a catch like this will never make a better one.
Think about Metcalf’s catch. He caught the ball, sure, but he also caught a defensive back’s head. He managed to secure both the ball and the head through the catch.
