Maryland hosted Northwestern this afternoon. The Wildcats have been a bit of a disappointment this season, and Maryland is playing its third-string QB after another bevy of injuries. So you’d be forgiven if you weren’t totally keyed up for this game.
After a game ball flew into the Maryland stands, the whole crowd got really into trying to throw it all the way around the field ... and then it happened again
Fan participation!

But sometimes, pretty interesting things happen during less-interesting football games, like an enormous game of hot potato that involves about half of the stadium. And hey, that just so happened during this exact football game!
See, there’s video of it and everything. Let’s all look at it.
Confused about what’s going on here? Here’s the story.
First, Northwestern kicked an extra point, it sailed over the net, and some Maryland fans managed to get a hold of the game ball, and apparently decided to not give it back.
According to our Maryland blog, Testudo Times, this football makes it nearly all the way around the stadium, before it was intercepted by a security guard.
But then another football ends up in the stands. So what happens next? Stadium Hot Potato Part II.
The game doesn’t get off to a great start, as an errant throw sends a fan into the empty bandstands in search of the football, but he recovers and delivers a strike into a completely different section of the stands. A few passes later, and you can hear the whole crowd start to get into this, not just our friends in the press box. Although they were quite liberal with praise too.
This seems like this could be the start of a promising new tradition for Maryland. After all, it couldn’t hurt to get a jump on scouting new walk-on QBs.
