USC player’s hit delivered to a Wazzu fan rushing the field being investigated for assault

Trojans coach Clay Helton said the unidentified player has been disciplined internally.

Last Friday night, Washington State upset then-No. 5 USC, 30-27, in Pullman, giving the Cougars a statement victory over a preseason CFP favorite. Unsurprisingly, a slew of Wazzu fans stormed the field to celebrate with the team after the big victory. One fan in the stands caught a USC player running off the field lay out a Cougars fan that was rushing the field.

In the video, you can’t make out who exactly the Trojan player is, and he hasn’t been identified. On Tuesday, after the video had made the rounds on social media, USC head coach Clay Helton said the player was disciplined internally:

Helton said today that “internal discipline has been taken and it will remain in house,” regarding the player who leveled a Washington State fan after the game.

You can’t blame the media for asking about something that went viral, or Helton for internally disciplining the player, either, really. According to the Spokesman-Review, WSU police is investigating to see if the hit could be classified as a misdemeanor assault:

WSU Police will assess the extent of the injuries sustained before determining the nature of potential assault charges, and the actual charges wouldn’t be pressed until next week – not until Hansen’s department is able to share information with a prosecuting attorney.

“We are looking into it,” WSU Police Assistant Chief Steve Hansen said. “We’re still gathering information, talking to witnesses, reaching out to USC to see if we can interview or they’ll interview the player for us. They’ll send it over to the PA’s office and see what they think. Earliest is going to be next week that we get this all combined.”

Hansen added that police have been in touch with the victim to gather information regarding any injuries he sustained.
