Ole Miss lost by 21 points and posted its head coaching application on the same day

It’s probably a coincidence, and that probably doesn’t matter.

Ole Miss is 2-3 after getting drubbed at Auburn on Saturday, 44-23. The Rebels aren’t much good, and how they do this season doesn’t matter much anyway, because they’re under a self-imposed bowl ban that’s designed to earn them NCAA mercy. Their NCAA compliance scandal could reach a resolution by a little later this fall.

Because of another scandal — involving ex-coach Hugh Freeze and phone calls to escort services — the Rebels are playing this mostly meaningless year under interim head coach Matt Luke. Freeze was fired late in the summer, and the application to replace him permanently went up Saturday on Ole Miss’ website:

The “Job Responsibilities” section of that application:

The selected candidate will organize and direct all aspects of the NCAA Division I Football program. Some of the responsibilities include identifying and recruiting athletically and academically qualified student-athletes; scheduling and conducting regular practice sessions; overseeing the administrative process for budget, student-athlete eligibility and academic progress; participating in fund raising and public relations activities; and promoting the philosophy and objectives of the Intercollegiate Athletics program that student-athletes should be successful athletically and academically. Knowledge of and commitment to compliance with all NCAA, Conference, departmental, and University rules and regulations as well as dedication to full academic development of student-athletes are essential.

If that sounds like something for you, you’re welcome to apply for the job. There’s a search firm copied on that app, and you can send your resume there.

Hotty Toddy.
