8 days after heart attack, Gene Stallings honored on field during game between his 2 teams

The former coach was on a ventilator for two days.

Former Texas A&M and Alabama head coach Gene Stallings was honored at halftime of the Aggies’ game against Alabama at Kyle Field on Saturday night. Stallings took the field along with his 1967 team that won the Southwest Conference Championship. The TAMU crowd was very happy to have their former coach on hand for the game.

Stallings being on the field on Saturday night looked unlikely last week — just last weekend, the 82-year-old former coach was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack. He was on a ventilator for a couple of days, but doctors expect him to make a full recovery. Since he’s suffered two strokes since May, the news came as a scare to many. Luckily, he was able to be honored with his ‘67 team on Saturday night.

Stallings coached the Aggies 1965-71, before he accepted the head coaching job at Alabama in 1990. He led TAMU to a 27-45 record during his tenure, and a Cotton Bowl victory in 1967. In Tuscaloosa, he finished with a 70-16 record, along and gave the Tide a national championship in 1992.

Get all better soon, coach!
