UConn found a truly innovative way to lose a football game on Saturday. The Huskies trailed Cincinnati, 22-15, in a meaningless game to close both teams’ seasons.
UConn was going to go for 2 and the win ... but ended up going for 1 and lost anyway
Things got bad quickly after a buzzer-beating TD.

The short version of how:
- UConn scored a touchdown with 0:00 on the clock.
- UConn opted for a game-deciding two-point conversion attempt.
- UConn took a penalty and had to kick a PAT to force overtime instead.
- UConn missed that PAT and lost.
The video distillation of those events:
As soon as Hergy Mayala caught the 2-yard touchdown pass that set up this entire ruckus, Huskies coach Randy Edsall put two fingers up in the air. But Mayala took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the course of celebrating that TD.
UConn would’ve been attempting the two-pointer from the Cincinnati 3-yard line. But the unsportsmanlike call pushed the Huskies back to the Bearcats’ 18. That made going for it impossible, and the extra point was suddenly a 35-yarder.
That’s not any kind of guarantee for a college kicker, and it wasn’t here. Michael Tarbutt hooked the kick just a bit to the left, and Cincinnati won, 22-21.
The Bearcats finished 4-8 to UConn’s 3-9.
