Iowa State signed Matt Campbell to a big extension, so the Cyclones aren’t losing their coach after their comeback 2017

Great news for Iowa State’s program.

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell agreed to a six-year contract with the school, the school’s athletic director says. It appears to extend Campbell’s term through 2023.

Campbell is just now wrapping up the second season of a six-year deal he signed before the 2016 season. That was slated to expire in 2021, so by Jamie Pollard’s wording here, the Cyclones are now paying Campbell an average of $3.5 million through 2023. That’s a raise of 67 percent designed to keep Campbell from going elsewhere.

They’re also giving him more money to pay assistant coaches, in what represents a pretty huge commitment to football at the school.

Iowa State is 7-5 this year and just completed its first regular season with a record north of .500 since 2005. Whichever bowl the Cyclones play in will be their first since 2012. Their wins this year include a road upset of then-No. 3 Oklahoma and a home upset of then-No. 4 TCU. Both of those teams were undefeated entering the game.

Campbell’s been floated as a candidate for the open head coaching job at Nebraska, and his turnaround of the Cyclones has made him attractive as an idea, at least, for fans of a bunch of teams.

Campbell’s extension is a clear indication that, at least for now, he’s not leaving Ames. Clones fans can breathe a sigh of relief for this offseason.

He was previously the head coach at Toledo, where went 35-15 in five years. He’s a combined 10-14 at ISU, though nine of those losses came in 2016.
