You remember how last season’s Clemson-NC State game ended, don’t you? With a chance to win, NC State shanked this field goal and forced the game to go to overtime. In the extra session, the Tigers held on to win.
This illegal shift penalty cost NC State a chance to tie the game against Clemson
Two years running, the Wolfpack have been so close to victory.

This year, the Wolfpack found a new and way to catch the L in the Textile Bowl.
On fourth down with the game coming down to the wire, this pass gets completed and NC State’s in business in the red zone, right? Wrong.
Illegal shift was called on the Wolfpack. The thing that did it was the wide receiver at the bottom of the screen moving forward at the snap. This is a thing that’s OK in the CFL, but not NCAA or NFL football. You can see his fellow receiver signaling for him to shift after noticing at the last second. The second receiver from the bottom isn’t set either, technically.
NC State fans were clearly not happy about this.
But it was the right call.
NC State quarterback Ryan Finley threw an interception on the repeat down, and the Tigers survived in Raleigh.
