This year’s ACC Championship game in Charlotte between the Clemson Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes got out of hand in a hurry. The Tigers went to the locker room with a 21-0 lead, and they didn’t let their feet off the gas in the second half, scoring another 17 to win 38-3. Miami didn’t even score a single point until a field goal in the fourth quarter. This pretty much sums up the night for the Canes:
In 2015, Clemson gave Miami its worst loss ever. In 2017, Clemson gave Mark Richt arguably his worst loss ever.
This one got ugly early.

Clemson hasn’t been too kind to Miami in the past. Just two seasons ago, the Tigers beat Miami 58-0 at Hard Rock Stadium, which was the worst loss in school history, and resulted in Al Golden getting fired after five seasons. Aaaand that means that Miami has lost to the Tigers by a total of 96-3 since 2015, folks.
And to put it even further into perspective, this is Richt’s second-worst loss in his coaching career. It’s just shy of Georgia’s 2009 loss to Florida by a score of 49-10.
Miami was this season’s Cinderella Story, and it was a hell of a ride to watch. The Canes’ luster obviously wore off with the upset loss to Pitt last week, but no one seriously expected Miami to be able to beat the Tigers, who are a much more complete team than the Canes at this point in Richt’s Miami career.
The U will get a nice bowl bid tomorrow during Selection Sunday, and this has been a heck of a season for the Canes. But a blowout loss in your team’s fist-ever conference championship appearance can’t feel good. But if things go according to plan for Richt, this won’t be the last ACCCG Miami makes it to.
