What should I know about the two teams in the Belk Bowl?
Wake Forest (7-5, 4-4 in ACC)
The Demon Deacons had a quality season. For one thing, they’ve gotten to a bowl game for the second year in a row. That had only happened once in program history, when Jim Grobe’s teams got to three in a row between 2006 and ‘08.
For another thing, they got revenge on Louisville, beating the Cardinals after they emerged at the center of 2016’s famed Wakeyleaks scandal, where Wake says an ex-assistant and radio announcer passed team secrets to UL before a Cardinals win. That was quite a story.
The Deacs have found respectability in the ACC. For more on their season, check out SB Nation’s Wake blog, Blogger So Dear.
Texas A&M (7-5, 4-4 in SEC)
The Aggies were a disappointment this year, as they’ve been in some form or fashion every season since Johnny Manziel’s Heisman campaign in 2012. Their year started with a devastating come-from-ahead loss at UCLA, and they never got liftoff. A mere eight-point loss to Alabama at home in early October made it look like a breakthrough was possible, but it didn’t happen. So the Aggies spent another year not contending in the SEC West.
On the bright side, this marks nine bowl seasons in a row, even though none of those has been a BCS, Playoff, or New Year’s Six game. The Aggies should keep getting at least this far every year, but this isn’t the level of success that people in College Station want. They’ll hope that new coach Jimbo Fisher gets them somewhere better, and he probably will.
